FAQs

1. What qualifications do you have in music composition?

I hold three degrees in music, including a PhD and a Master’s specifically in composition, along with a Bachelor’s in Music. My academic journey covered a wide range of subjects, from critical theory in film music to ensemble performance, composition, arranging, and orchestration. My research has focused on various aspects of music composition, including 20th-century instrumental composition, film scoring, and video game scoring.

2. What age groups do you teach?

I teach students of all ages. However, for students under the age of adulthood, I will require parental/guardian consent to ensure everyone involved is comfortable with the arrangement.

3. What styles or genres of music do you teach?

I specialise in teaching music within the Western Classical tradition, covering a wide range of styles and periods. This includes everything from the works of Bach and Beethoven to modern-contemporary compositions, including video game and film scoring.

4. Do I need any prior experience in music composition to take lessons with you?

No prior experience in music composition is necessary. However, having some knowledge of music theory and notation literacy can be beneficial. I typically recommend a standard equivalent to ABRSM Theory Grade 4 or above, as I often utilise music notation for teaching and analysis. I often teach theory in my lessons but through composition and analysis as opposed to being for theory examinations.

5. How are lessons structured?

My one-on-one sessions are structured around your individual goals and the work you’re doing to achieve them. Sessions are flexible and responsive to your progress. I recommend having analysis projects to fall back on in lessons, providing continuity and facilitating progress even during busy weeks.

6. What materials or software do I need for online lessons?

For online lessons, you’ll need access to the internet and Zoom. Additionally, having music notation software is recommended. While I use Sibelius, alternatives like Dorico or Musescore are also suitable. Sending your work in .sib or .xml format, along with a PDF, allows for efficient feedback during lessons.

7. How often are lessons scheduled, and what is the duration of each session?

Lessons are scheduled on an hourly basis. The rate is £47 for a one-off session or £40 per hour for students scheduling multiple lessons within a month. I’m happy to arrange lessons as one-offs or on an ad hoc basis, but regular students enjoy a discounted rate with at least two lessons per month.

8. What is your teaching philosophy or approach?

My teaching philosophy emphasizes the analysis and study of music as a means of unlocking creative potential. By exploring models and forms in composition, students gain the tools to overcome creative blocks and develop their composition skills effectively.

9. Can I request specific topics or focus areas for my lessons?

Absolutely! While I offer suggestions and recommendations, I encourage students to follow their interests and motivations. This approach enhances learning and engagement, allowing students to explore areas that resonate with them.

10. What is your cancellation policy?

I understand that unexpected events may require cancellations or rescheduling. Therefore, I have no limits on cancellation/rescheduling. That said, while I am accommodating, I appreciate as much notice as possible where possible. Prioritising regular students ensures continuity and progress, but I’m flexible to accommodate changes when needed.
